Theme shows through; "Down once more/Track down this murderer" -Webber

MOST IMPORTANT!
This song is: "Down once more/Track down this murderer"
Director: Andrew Lloyd Webber
-This anger the Phantom shows towards Raoul is expressed along with his dark side being unable to budge. The Phantom sings:

"This face - the infection which poisons our love ... This face, which earned a mother's fear and loathing ... A mask, my first unfeeling scrap of clothing ... Pity comes too late - turn around and face your fate: an eternity of this before your eyes!
CHRISTINE:This haunted face holds no horror for me now ... It's in your soul that the true distortion lies ...
PHANTOM:Wait! I think, my dear, we have a guest!Sir, this is indeed an unparalleled delight! I had rather hoped that you would come. And now my wish comes true - you have truly made my night!
RAOUL:Free her! Do what you like only free her! Have you no pity?
PHANTOM:Your lover makes a passionate plea!
CHRISTINE:Please Raoul, it's useless!
RAOUL:I love her! Does that mean nothing? I love her! Show some compassion ...
PHANTOM:The world showed no compassion to me!"(Phantom of the Opera Cast/ST Lyrics)

  1. You mentioned how Leroux had a lack of description, or a poorer writing style, for lack of a better term. Why do you think Andrew Lloyd Webber would choose such a novel to make into a play? Was in because he thought he could take the good thematic aspects of the novel and add more characterization, description, etc. using music?

    1. Personally, I am very glad that Webber decided to turn this story into a musical. I think the presence of music adds an element to the story that is unable to be seen. It can both express emotions much more vividly and provide an effective foreshadow. When Raoul sings, “I love her! Does that mean nothing? I love her!” it is much more effective and we can hear the distress in his voice, rather than if we had just read the words or heard him speak “I love her”. We can also determine what will happen next based on the music. If the Phantom is approaching, the music will most likely change from a cheerful song to a more sinister melody. In addition, using mise en scene (with music included) gives the story so much more depth. We can see the expressions on their faces, we can hear the strain in their voices and we can see the desperation in their eyes. If Webber had not turned this story into a musical, we would never be able to see any of that.
